Greetings dearest gentle readers. Let’s welcome Tony Mortley to our blog. In addition to writing all the songs on his upcoming original album, “Doctor Who Dreamers,” Tony Mortley, a multi-talented artist from Kent, England, also contributes his captivating vocals to the songs. The seven-song album was released on 23rd February. Let us talk more about this album
The title track is called “Cerby”. This song opens with light and fluffy guitar strums. The song is about a character who is encouraging his friend to keep smiling and to keep seeing the positive side of life (“Keep smiling”). Musically, the guitar work was simply amazing, and the vocals? Oh goodness me, it was just literal perfection from the beginning to the very end. The album has a really strong start with this tune
The next song is called “Charlie & Diane”. Another amazing guitar melody is what the song starts with. The song illustrates a very weird relationship between Charlie and Diane. It is unclear what their exact relationship is but they both feel unheard in this relationship. They keep crying out to each other in this ballad. The guitar strums were amazing and the vocal performance was so smooth like butter
Up next is called “strong”. The song opens with these dreamy guitar strums. The theme of the song is depression and mental health issues (“The world has been cruel and unkind”). This character was down in the dumps till he met this person. He talks in detail about how much this person turned his life around and gave him the strength to keep fighting to wake up and exist in the world (“You came along, you’ve made me feel like the world is a place that I want to embrace, I feel strong because of you”). This is a beautiful story about how we all needed a helping hand and that we can all do better or help people do better. This song was so gentle and profound and it lingers with you long after the song has ended
“True Guides and Angels” is the next song on the record. This song opens with this country-like twang guitar melody. The character in the song asks about what Love is about. (“What’s true love all about? I asked her, and she just smiled”). The character then finds out that true guides and angels exist to show us true love. The message of this song is not to glorify any higher power but, it just tells listeners that we have angels and helpers among us, we just need to find the one that is perfect for us. Musically, listeners get an emotive vocal performance and a melody that is so genuine and powerful
Next up is the song “Butterfly Friend”. This song has An upbeat start that catches you instantly. The song introduces listeners to this character who is offering pure friendship to someone who is down in the dumps. This is a person who genuinely cares about this friend and is trying to cheer him or her up (“You’re my butterfly friend”). The vocals were heavenly and the instrumentation was breathtaking
The next song is the namesake of the album “Doctor Who Dreamers”. The song opens with a very bright guitar melody. The song talks about two people who have been through the same thing, and as the survivors of this thing, they understand each other (“We are sole survivors”). The melody is so beautiful and the vocal performance is incredibly good.
The last song on the album is called “Spaceman”. The intro of this song sounds so sad right from the beginning. The song is all about bloodshot and war. These themes are very hard to discuss but, this artist has created a safe space where we are not ashamed to talk about these sensitive things. The vocal performance is top tier as usual and the instrumentation compliments the song so well. The album ends with this song and challenges us to ponder these important themes
Working with producer and guitarist Joe Cook, Mortley has created a unique musical experience that will provide listeners with a blend of Doctor Who influences, human conflict, and profound reflections on friendships and family relationships, both past and present. Recorded in a quirky studio in Sevenoaks, Kent, this album is not just another release, it is proof that Mortley is very talented. He knocked this album right out of the park, I can’t wait to hear more music from him
