Greetings dearest gentle readers and music lovers, today we share the talent of artists Klein and Jamison. Since 2018, Jim Klein and Ian Jamison have been working together. They’re based in Arizona and Colorado Jamison’s arrangements of George Gershwin’s Summertime and other American piano trio favorites were first performed by the Colorado Piano Trio at UNC Greeley in August 2022. On 15th October, the pair released a four-song EP called “Clarinet sonata “whiteout” “. Let’s talk more about it
The first song is “Chasm Lake”. This song opens with bright piano and clarinet sounds. This piece must have been inspired by the challenge that Klein faced alone, in the snow when he was overcome by the storm. The song gives off fear but later a joy of knowing that you’re not going to die like Klein found the strength to keep going after his solo backpacking to Chasm Lake
Next up is “above the clouds”. The song opens with glacial piano sounds and clarinet sounds. The flute takes the lead and gives an outstanding performance while simultaneously giving the piano to also have its time in the solo light. The title of this song is very accurate because this song indeed does make you feel like you’re soaring above the clouds, gliding and taking in that gorgeous cloud air
“Whiteout” is what this next song is called. The clarinet sound takes the lead yet again in the song. The sound is effortlessly beautiful and calming. The stringed instruments in this song do sound dramatic at a point but it’s this calm melody that washes over you over and over again till you feel consumed by the music, a powerful quality for a song to possess
The last song on the EP is called “the parking lot”. Piano sounds open this song with some other strings helping to shape the melody. The melody becomes this self-aware entity trying to show that you can be powerful and beautiful at the same time. This gorgeous song ends the EP
This piece, the Clarinet Sonata “Whiteout” is written by Jim Klein and Ian Jamison, and performed by Peter Stoll (clarinet) and Adam Żukiewicz (piano). It was written in 2022, premiered in 2023, and recorded in 2024. You notice that it took two years to finish and polish this song which is why is sounds so refined and amazing. Knowing the creative process helps you connect more with the song because you know that this is a product of love, a love child for these musicians. This song is a masterpiece and I can’t wait to hear more music from them
