Greetings dearest readers and music fans let’s give a warm welcome to IO Perry. Submitted by I.O. Perry American-born IO Perry is a seasoned musician with a lifelong love of using music to communicate stories. “All Flyers Down,” is IO Perry’s most recent record. This 14-song album has a beautiful tapestry of jangly melodies that dig into life’s most painful moments of love, loss, and longing. This album, which was released on October 31st, provides a window into IO Perry’s world through her delicate, whispery voice, which resonates with a wide range of emotions and experiences. Let’s talk more about this album
The album starts with the song “Oh perfect one”. The song opens with bright and cheery sounds. The song mentions a character who is far from being perfect (you twist and turn the truth”). The other character in the song calls the other one perfect in a sarcastic way. Sometimes we deal with people who are so full of themselves that they don’t realize how bad they are. Perry’s voice is perfect and the way she performs the song sells you to the fact that this person is the worst. With bright instrumentation to go with Perry’s voice, what you get is a winning combo which was perfect for opening the album
Next up is the song “Sitting Alone”. This song opens up with very upbeat instrumentals. The song is about a character who has been disappointed because she made plans with her dad but the plans never came through(”now I’m sitting I’m sitting alone”). The song is either a subtext about the character’s father who died or a character’s dad who is a deadbeat. Either way, there is a theme of loss and loneliness being described in the song. There is a solo which is a fusion of guitar, drums, and mouth percussions which is sensational
“Gone Gone Gone” is the next song on this record. The song opens with very slow instrumentation. This song also discusses the theme of loss. The character in the song seems to have left a place before heading or seeing something important (”now I’m gone gone gone”). There is a solo that is a blend of guitar and mouth percussions which are just divine!
Next is the song “Nashville to L. A” The song opens with very lovely violin sounds. The song is about a person who is in a long-distance relationship. She talks about how she misses him and how she will sweep him off his feet when they see each other. There is a violin solo that is very classy and it compliments the song
“Could You Be Loved” is the next song on the album. The song has a mid-tempo instrumentation. The song is about a character who has met a person who feels that he’s not worthy of love. She comforts him and lets him know that he is as lovable as any other person in the world and he deserves love just like everyone else. The story in the song is very heartwarming. Yet again the mouth percussions take the cake and garnish the song so beautifully
Next up is “Say a prayer for me”. The song opens with electric guitar and drum beats. The song talks about two people who are finding it difficult to part but they know that being alone is the best way forward. The first character asks the other to pray for her before he leaves. There is a mouth percussion, guitar, and drum solo toward the end that was so stunning and incredible
Next is the song “All Flyers Down #1”. The song opens with a dramatic sound. The harmonies on this song are just next level and the sound is so captivating and will blow you away
The next song on the album is called “Little Boy”. The song has an upbeat intro. The song describes the feeling you get when you see ok ur baby boy look up at you(”when he gazed up at me my heart skipped a beat”). When my little brother was born my heart also skipped a beat when he looked up at me and wondered how mom must have felt when she held him for the first time. This song finally explains how my mom felt. Not only is this song relatable it lets listeners know that at some point Perry had a baby boy or maybe has a baby boy now. I loved the vocal performance and the instrumentation and so will you
“Ghost of your dreams”. The song has a short intro. The song illustrates a male character who is telling someone he is dating or about to date that he is not over his ex. This makes this new woman in his life decide to back off. The instrumentation is a little dark and it suits the theme of the song because though the song mentions ghosts, it doesn’t mean actual dead spirits but memories from a dead relationship.
“On These Days” is the next song. This song opens with these gorgeous guitar sounds. The song talks about persona in the song dealing with a heartbreak. The song shows how breakups can be. One day you’re glad you did and on other days you try to figure out why the relationship ended and start to miss the person. The vocal performance is very soothing and tender. This emotive song will take you along to feel the feelings of the character
“Playing Things Safely” is the song that is up next. The song is very upbeat right from the start. The song talks about how sometimes we are in our head about getting the right and the perfect person to date that we dismiss people, don’t take risks, and find ourselves alone. The song is foot-tapping and will delight you
Next on the album is “Funny How Love Works That Way”. The song has a mid-tempo intro. The song talks about a character who pushed a persistent guy away and when he finally wore her down and started dating her, he doesn’t even look her way. You can tell how disappointed the character is and how she feels lonely. The vocal performance is very beautiful and this song talks about the complexities of relationships you will enjoy this delightful song
The second to last song is “Spellbound”. This song has country flair right from the very beginning. In the song, the character is tired of being a shoulder to be leaned on. She tells the other character that she no longer loves him and will no longer be there for him. This song is incredibly powerful and the instrumentation creates this soundscape that listeners can escape to
The last song on the album is called “All Flyers Down # 2”. The song opens with slow guitar sounds. The song illustrates a character who tells the people around her that the person they had been waiting for is now lost at sea. The song is very moving and the dreamy guitar and operatic violin sound give this song a very nice layer and a great sonic experience
This album is a masterpiece. Perry decided to stop touring after playing bass in several indie bands to focus on her love of film composing and to raise her kid (the song Little Boy is about her son Finn). She chose to make another solo album although still focusing on film and television composition. She also enlisted the help of her long-time comrades, Michael Regilio (guitar), Alan James Bailey (guitar), and Topo (drums). Perry also enlisted Jenny Schienman an accomplished violinist with her ensemble. These professionals were really on their A game in this album, adding their touch to Perry’s original and incredible songs. Perry is a great artist and I can’t wait to hear more music from her
