On your first listen, Bangerz is a unique kind of record that you will either love or hate, but it gets better every time you hear it. Beneath the drama, the nudity, and the public feuding lies a bright and talented young lady who has a bright future ahead of her.

 

The two hits from her fourth album Bangerz, We Can’t Stop and Wrecking Ball, highlight the two extremes of the musical spectrum. Miley delivers an eclectic 13-track pop-hip-hop-country collection peppered with poignant ballads, possibly reflecting her well-publicized romance and breakup with actor Liam Hemsworth. A number of well-known guests make appearances on the album, including Britney Spears, Nelly, and Big Sean.

 

Before the party continues with SMS (Bangerz), the party pop song We Can’t Stop follows next.Miley is joined by pop icon Britney Spears on this gritty dance single, which is based on synth-pop hip-hop and samples Salt ‘N’ Pepa’s Push It. The ladies attempt their hand at rapping. Although the song is a great party music ideal for the clubs, it is a little repetitive, which can get boring. Bangerz takes a brief break with “My Darlin’,” an R&B ballad featuring Future that samples “Stand By Me.” This song and the subsequent tune Drive are two more examples of Bangerz’s emotionally charged songs, which are generally thought to be the better ones. Miley departs from her previous upbeat pop sound and once more displays her vocal prowess.

 

Next up is the intense pop ballad Wrecking Ball, which showcases more of Cyrus’ intensely emotional side when she performs the hit song. Later on in Maybe You’re Right and Someone Else, when she talks about terminating a relationship, this aspect of herself comes back. The hip-hop song Love Money Party, which features Big Sean and was written and produced by Pharrell Williams, uplifts the atmosphere. Pharrell’s influence is evident in the latter, which has a catchy, lively beat and suggestive lyrics like “Don’t you think it’s time/To get it on” and “I’ve been laying in this bed/All night long.”

In the passionate F U featuring French Montana, Cyrus demonstrates her tenacity and channels Adele in a song that may be directed at her ex-boyfriend Hemsworth (“I’ve got two letters for you/One of them’s F and the other one’s U”). With Do My Thang, a popular song that further accentuates Miley’s carefree attitude, she continues to demonstrate her independence.

Bangerz is an amazing collection overall, with the young artist sharing her heart on her sleeve about her love and heartbreak experiences (Adore You, Drive, Wrecking Ball) and fusing pop, R&B, hip-hop, and synth to create several dance party hits (#GETITRIGHT, We Can’t Stop, Do My Thang). Bangerz is going to take a lot of people by surprise, as Miley Cyrus shows that she’s more than just a gorgeous face in the pop world.
