Chris Brown’s latest – an ambitious and expansive 45-track double album – sees the artist testing the patience and fortitude of his dedicated fans. The album features an impressive array of guest appearances (Usher, DeJ Loaf, Lil Yachty, Ty Dolla $ign, and Kodak Black among others), and the range of styles and moods to be expected of such a mammoth release. Already record-setting (the fastest album by a male singer to hit gold in the US), how does this juggernaut stack up to his previous efforts?

The breakup tunes Deuces, Don’t Judge Me, and New Flame reveal a more sensitive side to the party animal of the preceding twenty-plus tracks, giving the second half of the album a more solemn vibe. “Had a meeting with the devil last week” is a grim representation of the murky side of fame in Yellow Tape, which places Brown in the core of a violent and murderous underworld

When it comes to nearly all double albums, whether they are concept or not, careful editing is justified. I don’t think many of Brown’s fans will have the endurance to watch this through, even though there are a few good songs (which is to be expected considering the volume here). Chris Brown’s attempt at grandiosity ends out as a bloated, uneventful mess at two hours forty minutes.
