Ariana Grande – Dangerous Woman

  • Release date: 20 March 2016
  • Label: Republic, Universal Music

The delightful symphonic pop, pulsating house, glittering electro, Nicki verse, horn-flecked breeze called “Greedy” (our fave), a Weezy verse, a kind of bluesy thing with Macy Grey, a Future verse, and a song literally named “Bad Decisions” can all be found on Ariana Grande’s third album. However, there’s hardly any sign of the Ariana Grande who purportedly leaves the meet-and-greet mode like Patrick Bateman does, licks unsold doughnuts, and harbours some disdain for America in private. Undoubtedly, a significant number of diligent experts think this is a good thing, but it’s obviously not

These tracks, which combine a powerful persona—haughty, ravenous, a little manic, really into you—with a vivid pocket version of one style or another, form the basis of a quick, thoughtless pop album, even though it’s having trouble breaking free from the rote 2016 obligations (Future) and false notes (“Dangerous Woman”) of what’s presumably an executive-mandated bagginess. Grande is sweet and vivid, crooning clichés over a cool landscape of plucked and swooping strings on the almost title-track “Moonlight.” She is enthralled in “Into You,” laughing through love on “Greedy,” or crooning promises on “I Don’t Care.” Grande is a free and gleeful agent, the miscreant with a bunny mask on the cover.

She becomes someone’s image of something better than a diva: another hardworking professional, as her edges soften and her strange intensity lessens in between. Knowing this is bullsh*t, Nicki Minaj makes her customary pop-in on “Side to Side,” declaring, “I give zero f**ks and I got zero chill in me.” They ought to get together more.
